Better access to Tech Education

Tech Spark is Canada’s first tech and design school committed to empowering children of colour, girls, women, and teachers through innovative education. As a woman of color in tech, I was honored to work with trailblazers in this space. Being a part of the TechSpark Initiative has also given me the opportunity to provide UX learning workshops to students through their TechSpark Educator offering.

My Role

I was consulted to provide UI/UX direction for the new TechSpark website. As a lean start-up, I had the opportunity to work closely with the founder and developer to actualize this site.
The goal was to provide an improved website user experience for teachers and other identified target markets that will consequently lead to an increase in donations, funds raised and adoption of TechSparks programs.

Understanding & Benchmarking

The TechSpark Site before the refresh

With limited resources, we had to be lean and creative in our approach to the redesign of the site. With Google Analytics and good relationships with teachers in the field, I developed an adhoc UX research strategy that allowed us to gather data-driven insights on what kind of improvements the site really needed.

Other research activities used to fill the gaps

A short survey conducted with a few teachers also helped validate our assumptions on how their personas will want to interact with the site and what value they intended to get. Competitve analysis of other tech education sites gave us a good benchmark on the Information Architecture (IA) direction and content strategy. With these findings we were able to refine the IA of the site

Ideating & Wireframing

With a few more rounds of massaging the site content and aligning with the business strategic goals, we landed on a design that drove home the business vision, aligned with the end-users wants and needs and gave the team an improved brand perception.
